Position Description

The Faculty of Environmental Design is introducing a new graduate-level Certificate in Designing Smart and Secure Communities. This post-baccalaureate Certificate is intended for practitioners in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, economic development, public policy and other disciplines who want to acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to both smart communities and design for security¿¿often referred to as Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Design out Crime, or Environmental Crime Reduction. The Certificate will address the needs of working professionals who wish to upgrade their skills and knowledge; to add a relevant professional credential; and to focus on reflective and critical approaches within a concentrated program delivered over a one-year period at the Faculty of Environmental Design. 

The Faculty of Environmental Design is currently recruiting for a Term Certain (Sessional) Instructor to teach a half-course in Designing Safe Communities. The course will be offered in an intensive block format at a date in 2018, to be determined. The Term Certain (Sessional) Instructor will provide all required curriculum materials for this course and will collaborate with the Director, EVDS Post-Baccalaureate Certificate and the Designing Smart and Secure Communities Advisory Committee to oversee the development and effective delivery of this Certificate. 

The Term Certain (Sessional) Instructor will be responsible for designing the course content based on materials provided by the SAFE Design Council and delivering it in an innovative and engaging manner to create a positive learning experience. In particular this will mean:

a)            Presenting course content including lectures, seminars, readings, assignments, digital resources and other curriculum materials in an intensive block format during the scheduled time

b)            Specification and development or any pre- or post-session study materials, if educationally appropriate.

c)            Evaluation of assignments, student presentations and seminar discussions with constructive feedback and in a timely manner.

d)            Submission of final grades on a timely basis.

Course Description

Based on the established training curriculum for certification of the SAFE Design Council, with supplementary material to increase the theoretical foundations of the topics. The SAFE Design Standard® begins with the assessment of the risk posed to a site by outside factors, and then includes an assessment of site access points, wayfinding and signage, pathways and roadways, barriers and fencing, visibility and illumination, mechanical and electronic security, and other design elements intended for controlling access and movement within a building or site.


Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree and show demonstrated evidence of strong teaching and educational development abilities. They must also be an SAFE Design Accredited Professional (SAFE-AP¿) in good standing with the SAFE Design Council. The successful candidate must possess a clear understanding of how to apply current and emerging principles and ideas to deliver effective teaching and learning in this field at a post-baccalaureate level.  Also essential are strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated abilities in managing and delivering similar curriculum development and instructional projects.
