Position Overview

The Faculty of Environmental Design invites applications for a Pollinator Taxonomic Technician. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and will identify prepared bee specimens collected in Southern Alberta to genus and species.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Examine thousands of specimens under a microscope in order to differentiate dozens of wild bee species
  • Assemble taxonomic data on the abundance, diversity and distribution of insect pollinators and agriculturally beneficial insects in Alberta agroecosystems, from insect collections made in the summers of 2017 and 2018
  • Use specific technical skills to identify and classify the bee specimens

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Entomology, Invertebrate Biology, Ecology or equivalent courses
  • Experience identifying to genus and species bees that may be found in Southern Alberta
  • Experience using a dissecting microscope to identify diagnostic anatomical features of insects
  • Familiarity with insect collection, insect preservation and taxonomic protocols
  • Proficient use of dichotomous keys for insect families, genera and species
